Sentry Air Systems was originally approached by an Acupuncturist for a fume extraction solution in 2008. She was practicing Chinese medicine using Moxa cigars (derived from an herbal plant- the mugwort).
Moxa (or moxibustion) is used to treat various ailments via heat treatment and acupuncture points on the body. When this herb is burned, it releases smoke and odor.
At the time, we had no experience with the herb and knew little regarding what filters would absorb the extremely aromatic fumes associated with the Moxa treatments.
Our chemical research team tested several filter combinations to find a successful fit to help eliminate the fumes and create a clean working environment for the acupuncturist and client.
We found that the burning paper used during this treatment was producing micro-particles, and the moxa itself was emitting herbal fumes and odor.
Because of these findings, the Sentry Air research team chose to utilize HEPA filtration (to remove particulate) and high-quality activated carbon filter media (to remove odor). Today, we have successfully sold to several Acupuncturists in the United States who proudly and safely use Moxa treatments:
