Proper IV Bag and Medication Preparation Can Help Save Lives

Utilizing an ISO Class 5 Cleanroom for IV bags and medication preparation aids in preventing medication contamination and can help protect patient safety. In the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Foundation for Mothers and Infants has installed three 40” IV Hoods or Portable Clean Rooms in the NICU of three different hospitals to improve their IV bag and medication preparation process. The Dominican Foundation for Mothers and Infants is a non-profit organization that strives to decrease neonatal mortality in the Dominican Republic.

Since implementing these safety protocols, the Dominican Foundation for Mothers and Infants has reported that infant mortality has decreased by over 35% in the NICU. The Dominican Foundation for Mothers and Infants and the Dominican Republic government are very pleased with their success and have requested two more IV Hoods/Portable Clean Room Hoods to be installed in two additional hospitals.

Before Using Portable Clean Room Hoods

Below is a picture of their previous procedure for preparing injections and IV medications. They used no environmental controls and wore no gloves. Their old process allowed for possible contamination of the medication which can be detrimental to sensitive newborn babies.

Compare this to their new safer medication preparation protocol, including a 40” IV Hood/Portable Clean Room Hood, full garb, face masks, hair nets, and gloves. Utilizing these safety measures helps prevent external contamination of the IV bag and injectable medication.

About IV Hoods/Portable Clean Rooms

IV Hood

IV Hoods/Portable Clean Room Hoods provide a reduced particulate workspace ideal for preparing IV bags and medication.

IV Hoods or Portable Clean Room Hoods create an ISO Class 5 Cleanroom workspace. These hoods provide filtered air to protect the application from outside contamination. A powerful fan draws ambient air into the filtration system, removing most airborne particles. Air flows into the hood in a laminar flow pattern to create a clean sterile workspace. This system utilizes a dual-stage filtration system consisting of a pre-filter and a main filter (HEPA or ULPA filter). IV Hoods are compact and take up little space providing an economical solution for a clean room environment. Our systems can help facilities meet USP 797, the standard for sterile compounding. USP 797 requires that all sterile compounding including IV bag preparation be conducted in ISO Class 5 cleanroom air or better.
